Dobbies

UK-Wide Commercial Property

  • Mill Architects operates as one of Dobbie's appointed UK architect practices, working on developing new stores across the UK and supporting the redevelopment of existing stores to improve performance. automotive sales, vehicle servicing, general office functions, staff welfare, coach works and vehicle parts storage facilities.

  • Mill has been working with Dobbies since 2005, when we were commissioned to assist with the development and landscape of their new store in Dunfermline. As the working relationship between Mill and Dobbies grew, they adopted and designed a new environmentally sustainable building model for the flagship store in Aberdeen. The model has since evolved and been rolled out across their UK network of stores.

  • New Stores

The brand new stores in Liverpool and Livingston designed by Mill Architects are built on timber glulam structures with the signature Dobbies' exterior aesthetic of timber and dry-stone cladding. These natural materials help the buildings respond to their environment while adhering to the brand's house style to help build recognition across the country.

The developments were designed and built in an environmentally responsible manner. The glulam structures provide all the beauty of solid timber but allow for more creative and expansive designs. The architectural drama is heightened with the exposed beams visible from inside and out through extensive glazing. Liverpool also boasts a bold, winged roof shape opening to the corner of the site as one of the first structures visitors see on arrival in Liverpool; it was essential to make a striking first impression.

    Redevelopment

With a change in business strategy and a new emphasis on a varied shopping experience, Dobbies identified the requirement to restructure its outdoor space at Melville. Mill Architects designed a set of custom retail pods allowing Dobbies to lease store space to other retailers, providing customers with a much more comprehensive range of products.

The pods are linked by an impressive timber pergola, which shelters customers from all types of Scottish weather as they visit the retail stores. We selected materials that would retain the outdoor garden centre feel, support the brand's architectural aesthetic, and create a stylish and comfortable shopping environment.
