The Mill House, Conversion, Buteland Farm, Balerno
Buteland Farm is home to a beautiful farm steading and traditional Horse Mill. The Duncan’s wanted to convert the two connected buildings into a stunning home for their family.
We worked with them at every stage to ensure their new home would be luxurious and comforting. as well as being ready-to-build with planning permission granted, before approaching any contractors. This was especially important as the Horse Mill itself is Category B listed.
The circular walls of the mill building, and the star-shaped beams in the ceiling were the initial hook for our unique design. Mr and Mrs Duncan have made their striking family living room a real focal point, as it catches the sun from every direction throughout the day.
Running from end to end of the building, the large central hallway forms the pivotal space in the house. Every room is linked directly together from this hallway, while the timber staircase adds warmth to the space without blocking light from above.
The exposed stone walls, and flagstone flooring are sympathetic to the history of the original building, while the use of full height windows and roof lights add brightness and an airy feel.
