Dobbies Garden World, Aberdeen

Out to the west of Aberdeen city centre lies the first of a new generation of buildings that house Dobbies Garden World. We worked with the Dobbies team to design a new model for their garden centres and retail development, which aligned with their company’s and customers’ core values.

We started with a structure of glulam timber, which allows for a larger and more robust framework than can be achieved in solid timber. We then added a variety of external wall and roof treatments, to maximise the levels of natural daylight. The overall intention was to create a welcoming and outdoorsy feel even within the retail environment.

With environmental responsibility in mind, we selected a range of materials including timber and dry-stone cladding. A living roof, layered with sedum, reintroduces some all-important greenery to the footprint of the building. Overall, this simple palette of materials allows the building to respond sensitively to its green-built site.
