Coletti & Co, Café and Takeaway, Lothian Road, Edinburgh
Italian café culture is a world apart from the coffee shops we’re used to here in the UK. With Coletti & Co, Allan and Lia wanted to reflect their personal background, whilst still creating a comfortable and familiar environment for patrons to catch up with clients and friends.
The Café and Take Away occupies a shop unit within a B-listed tenement, so we had to work with the existing structure of the space. We worked with the clients, and the Council’s planning team, to ensure the design was acceptable for planning purposes and ready to build.
Edinburgh tenements have beautiful cornicing, so we were excited to retain this original feature / recreate these in a modern style (delete as needed!) We also wanted to add a beautiful design element in the elaborate patterned tiling around the counter area.
To balance out these sumptuous details, we worked with the exposed stone wall and added dark-stained timber cladding, to keep a comfortable, casual atmosphere. The lighting was really important here as well, and we selected to different styles to separate the serving and seating areas. The shapes and colours are echoed throughout different design features so that each element ties together to create a coherent whole.
